Stuff of the Day

Update: So, yeah, my former plans for regularish updates of the site again . . . weren’t fruitful.  Lots of shit happening, major pain in the ass illness, busy-ness, procrastination, laziness, and so forth.   Anyway.  After work today, I went to The Wine Rack, and bought $32.19 in beer.  2 six-packs, and 4 individual bottles (of varying sizes) of beer, representing 6 different countries.  Most of it is for my dad for Father’s day.  Throwing in some Irish brew I have left from this last weekend, there’ll be 7 countries worth of beer for him.  Out of the stuff that I do get to sample . . . I have to say, I like the Xingu.  It’s a Brazilian black beer, somewhat similar to Shiner’s Bohemian Black.  It’s better than the Shiner, which says a ton for me.  It’s also more expensive.  About 50% more per six.

My car, on Sunday, developed a noise.  Sort of a buzz, or a rapid rattle, inside the car.  Outside the car, it’s clearly something metal rattling.  It’s got me concerned, as it’s started happening more and more.  Something is probably loose.  I hope it’s an easy fix.  But even if it is, it’s an unwelcome expense with sucky timing.  I’m trying to save up some blasted money for GenCon in August, dammit.  Of course, spending money on food out 3 times this week, then $30 on something I truly don’t need (but is extremely cool, a 50mw green laser pointer) and $32 on beer doesn’t help that situation any.  Or $25 going to the doctor yesterday morning for her to basically tell me “you look fine, take Tylenol and gargle with salt water” because my throat was starting to itch again, and Jade came down on Monday with what seems to be the same thing that had me horribly sick before and I feared I was still contagious.

I was supposed to take it in to Jimmie’s shop Friday morning.  But because I’ve got to get up stupid early for a work trip to Amarillo Friday morning, I had to reschedule.  To the following Thursday, the soonest they can get me in now, because they’re so busy.  Grr.  I really hope something on my car doesn’t explode or fall off before then.

Photos From Bourbon Street & NOLA

This last weekend, James and I flew to New Orleans/Metairie for work.  After we got done with everything, we had a couple of hours Saturday night to explore and try to have a little bit of fun.

First, we ate at NOLA, one of Emeril’s restaurants.  It was good.  No photos in there, but I drank Chimay Blue, an excellent Belgian beer, extremely smooth, almost a chocolatey texture (not the taste of chocolate), and 9% alcohol.  James was on an Abita kick (Abita being a local LA brewery).

After NOLA, we wandered around Bourbon Street for a bit.

Stuff of the Day

Update: Went home after work yesterday, and took an evening of very easy rest, aided by 2 beers.  Tried Shiner Light . . . it was OK.  Stronger taste than most light beers, and a little, to me, unusually yeasty.  Not BAD, but I’d still prefer Shiner’s Bock or Black Lager to it by quite a bit going by sheer taste.  Also tried the Shiner Hefeweizen.  Interesting beer, probably the best Hefeweizen I can remember trying, also very yeasty.  Still not overly a fan of Hefeweizens overall as one of a preferred styles of beer, but I’ve certainly tasted far worse.

Got a text message this morning from Bounce Energy, informing me I had a pending disconnect on my account.  39 minutes on the phone with them again, probably all but about 5 of that on hold, talked to two different people, one of which talked to his boss and the business office.  He read some of my notes back, and said, “Unbelievable.”  I said, “Yeah, unbelieve is a word I’d use for pretty much all of my dealings with anyone there for the last 3 months.”  James piped in with, “I’ll second that.”  After a while, he informed me that he’d make sure it’d get taken care of TODAY, and that someone would call me back to let me know when it had, indeed, been taken care of.  Yeah, we’ll see.

Cancelled Stuff

I simply don’t feel up to a Stuff of the Day today.  I had a fun, bad, fun night last night.  My body was still working on metabolizing the alcohol when I slumped into work this morning.  On time, but I was moving only by force of will this morning, and I felt like hell for a while.

Hung out with Ivy and Peel, and surprisingly, Tomas last night.  Left to go meet a date at Barnes and Noble.  She never showed up.  Oooh, was I pissed.  That led to me meeting back up with Peel and Ivy and Tomas, at a different location (Woofers and Tweeters), and some impulsive decisions on my part as regards my alcohol consumption.  Got the email address of this girl I met at Woofers.  Now ran into the problem I predicted yesterday with conflicting single-letter name-associated psuedonyming.  Already have a J.  Am seriously not in any state right now to come up with a good methodology.  Anyone have any suggestions?

Restaurant Review: Murray’s Deli

So, after finally getting my car back (more on that later), today was the first day in a week I’ve been able to enjoy simple things like, “driving myself to work in my own car.”  Another benefit was being able to go somewhere for lunch without having to beg a ride from a co-worker.

Sure, I could have gone with a quick, cheap ($2-3) microwave meal, and just picked up something from Albertson’s or Wal-mart.  But being able to go someplace after a week of not, I wanted to go eat somewhere.  Ahh, but where?  That’s the vexing question.  I mulled things over for probably an hour and a half, and still didn’t know exactly where I was going when Ifinally left for lunch about 1:30 this afternoon.

“I’m going . . . somewhere,” I said to James and Corey as I headed for the stairs.

Where I ended up, was someplace I’d been considering about, and more or less opted for simply because I’d given it a little more consideration than anywhere else:  Murray’s Deli.  James had done a mini-review of Murray’s a couple of weeks back on his blog , and he mentioned he liked getting burgers there.  So . . . what the hell.

It was a good choice.  I had a Murray’s Best Burger, with lettuce, bacon, and swiss cheese, curly fries (oy, greasy, but pretty good) and . . . a pint of Shiner Bockon draft.  Yes, that’s right – Murray’s has Shiner on draft.  I was sold right there when I saw that.  I will be returning many times to their establishment.
